13 Goto80 – Feed the World

Through the royal likes of Candymind: Peppermint Pony and Bubblegum Octopus presents a very nice twisted micro-style christmas collection with lots of goodies. I especially like the songs by 3PL3T1CF1T, Bit Shifter, Dorothy’s Magic Bag, ipaghost, Unicorn Dream Attack… well, just go get all of the 24 tracks here.

Still not sure about my song – a quick and weird “interpretation” of Band Aids* old song Do They Know It’s Christmas? (check out the covers!). Read the original lyrics here (filed under ethnocentrism).

This site runs a 100% anti-funky General MIDI version of the song, if you’re into those perversions. (which you are, ofcourse)

Chip Music Ripoff

Sunday, December 17th, 2006

Just recently the Norwegian band Fitts For Fight stole chiptunes from Stu, Binärpilot, drx, and others. They added their vocals and got hyped in Norway for their teen trash porn DIY style, and apparently made some money off it. After this scandal though, them and “their” songs got taken off Myspace and Last.fm. People are upset with this, and you can support their quest to find the original authors here. Eventhough stealing things without credit atleast used to be quite normal in the chipmusic scene, this is a bit too much! I can’t help but finding it a bit funny though. :)

Other examples of commercial rip-offs of chip music:

  • Nelly Furtado’s last album featured a song called ‘Do It’ that was a total rip-off of Tempest‘s song Acid Jazzed Evening. Check out this torrent or this youtube-clip to get the idea. Legal action in the air…
  • An older “rip-off” is the MTV-hit You’ve Got My Love where Bastian sampled the drums off Jeroen Tel and Reyn Ouwehand’s old C-64 song Rubicon. In the end, Bastian had to pay for it though.
  • Bodenständig 2000 got ripped off by the commercial mobile phone terrorists Jamba a couple of years ago. I forgot about the details though…
  • Zombie Nation‘s ‘Kernkraft 400′ covered David Whittaker’s Lazy Jones (subtrack21) but according to NME Whittaker did actually receive money for it.
  • I can’t think of any more examples. Help me out here. But anyway, the moral of this story is: don’t just take it away!

  • 10 Years HVSC (C64-musicdisk 2006). “I almost pissed my pants from laughing! :D DD That sounds like a wannabe jazzy schoolband doing rehearsal in the backyard, just brilliant!!!” / Steppe in the HVSC-crew.
  • Fulfräs by Goto80 (C64-music, #? @ Amiga Summer Party 2006). I made this gabber song when I was really tired and it made me feel funny. Funny!
  • Diskmachine by Goto80 (C64-music, #2 @ Big Floppy People 2006). Another one of those songs I made at a demoparty. Thanks to Iopop/Triad for retrieving this from the floppy disk when I accidently deleted the song!
  • Vafalls! by Goto80 (Amiga-music, #3 @ Big Floppy People 2006).
  • Grandmaster Skrub by Skrub (Amiga-music, #? @ Backslash 2006). This is a song I made in 1995.
  • Acidroos by Goto80 (C64-music, #3 @ Backslash 2006). Yes, made at the party. 6581 weirdness.
  • Flax-91 by Goto80. Amiga-music. #1 @ Up Rough Drunken 15 minute ST-01 Compo.
  • Köttlars by Goto80 (C64-music, #1 @ St Lars Meeting 2006). Weird C64-beats, made at the party.

Digi-Dig is a 10-track ogg-release free for download at Da ! Heard It Records. Plays in Winamp. Includes electro, trash, funk, pop, metal, etc. If you hurry up, you can buy your own copy with crazy fresh bonus material!

  • “I highly recommend this album! GOTO80 is a living legend, and this release is proof that he is still topnotch.” / Twilight Electric
  • “Digi-dig is just as ass-good as you could imagine, eventhough it’s not the Great American record this time either.” / Puterman
  • “Little logic for much of chaos, that leaves in all the directions and especially in the nonsense… but what it is full with taste!” / Culture Netlabel (babelfish-style)
  • “If you like all of the songs on a Goto80-release you’re just as disturbed as he is, and then you might aswell quit. Game over, asswanker!” / Puterman
  • “It would say that the best thing than has done, you must assume that Goto80 is better than your mothers.” / Logarythm (babelfish-style)
  • “I love that he do with the sound ideas, the limited timbres explaining different histories, really as an 8 bits jazz band… [...] I believe that GOTO80 has a global vision very guessed right of his work. Even some have a certain degree of dramatism that I agree. And it has force.” / The Express Pot (read it!)

    Blip Festival in New York

    Sunday, December 10th, 2006

I played at Blip Festival, which is the badest chip music festival to date. 40 musical and visual artists from Europe, USA and Japan rocked for 4 days just next to Wall Street! How about for example Anamanaguchi, Bud Melvin, Mark DeNardo, Hally, Quarta330, Virt, x|k and YMCK with visuals by C-men, Voltage Controlled, noteNdo? Well, too bad if you weren’t there! But there’s 1700 photos and 86 videos for you instead. :) And here’s x|k’s Goto80-tagged photos. And there’ll be a DVD out aswell, so don’t you worry. Be there next year though…………
